Ciudad Real Madrid: More on AFC Bournemouth's Spanish training base

AFC Bournemouth will base themselves at Ciudad Real Madrid, the training facility of Spanish giants Real Madrid, for the duration of their three-day camp in Spain.

The first team players and staff arrived in the Spanish capital on Wednesday evening, but exactly what facilities will they be making use of during their stay?

Ciudad Real Madrid, translated to Real Madrid City, is located in the north-east Valdebebas suburb of the city of Madrid, just a stone’s throw away from Barajas Airport.

Opened in 2005, the training complex spans almost 300 acres and is 40 times bigger than the club’s stadium, the Santiago Bernabeu, 16 times bigger than the Red Square in Moscow and 2.7 times bigger than the Vatican City.

A giant T-shaped building containing changing facilities, gymnasiums, medical centres, classrooms and more is surrounded by 13 pitches, a combination of both grass and synthetic. The main entrance to the complex is at the base of the T, with academy players working their way through the ages groups progressing towards the top of the building where the first team are based.

As well as residential facilities for up to 57 players, the state-of-the-art facility also includes the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium, the home ground of Real Madrid Castilla, the club’s reserve side.

And for the Cherries’ training camp, Eddie Howe’s side will base themselves on one of the pitches allocated to Real Madrid Castilla, effectively one pitch down from Real Madrid’s first team base.
